Austrian Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change and Action Plan

© BMK Climate change already has a significant impact on Austria. Adverse effects are expected to cause problems for many socio-economic and natural systems, across Europe and particularly in the Alpine region. This includes more frequent more intense extreme weather events and a possible increase of natural hazards. This also implies new circumstances to crisis and disaster management. Therefore, in addition to mitigation efforts, adapting to the consequences of climate change grows increasingly crucial. Successful adaptation requires sustainable, efficient, and socially balanced action. Austria was one of the first EU countries to develop a Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change incl. an Action Plan (NAP) in 2012. The revised Austrian Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change and Action Plan (2024) serve as the overarching framework for all relevant activities aimed at securing our livelihoods for the future. It includes action criteria and +120 specific recommendations in the Action Plan, covering areas such as protection from natural hazards and crisis and disaster management.
